Since diabetes is hard to diagnose out of the physician’s office or lab, researchers are trying to use the annual or bi-annual visit to the dentist as their chance to get a jump on the diabetes which afflicts a growing number of people globally.
The researchers area trying to determine the best method to hit two birds with one stone in their novel approach to get the patient’s teeth healthy and to get them diagnosed for a disease they may not even know they had.
They can opt for simple blood tests or protein tests that are somewhat similar to pregnancy tests that use isolated and chemically treated strips of material that change color in the presence of abnormally high blood sugar levels. This would give the patient the best possible diagnostic tool to determine the existence of the disease should it be present allowing better treatment and care.
